Welcome to Sakura Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) Located at 87 Bassett Highway in Dover New Jersey (NJ), a state-of-the-art martial arts studio specializing in Gracie Jiu Jitsu (GJJ), Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and fitness. We encompass all of the most prevalent martial arts styles and forms—Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Jiu Jitsu, Kickboxing and Striking—to provide students with the most up-to-date forms and techniques.
Over the past few years Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has exploded onto the scene, and through organizations like UFC and Strikeforce, practicing only one martial art form in a thing of the past. Nowadays all of the arts are incorporated into one practical art that will teach you self defense, confidence and fitness!
Jiu Jitsu is a core art consisting of grappling, wrestling, submissions and control. It was originally derived from the Japanese art of Kodokan Judo, and was since perfected by the Gracies.
Sakura Brazilian Jui Jitsu breaks the common theory of one having to be bigger and stronger to be more dominant. Chief Instructor Chris Civello teaches that a smaller, weaker person can defend himself against a bigger and stronger opponent simply by using leverage and technique.
“If you want to be the best, you have to surround yourself with the best.”
Civello has trained with Gracie descendants and has worked with some of the top BJJ and mixed martial artists around the world. A passion to pass along what was embedded within him, Civello is adamant about his teaching. He strives to work with students to bring out their love of martial arts and help them to engulf the teaching so they can excel in all they do.
At Sakura Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, students come from all walks of life, different ages and athletic levels, but they all come with one purpose in mind—to better themselves both physically and mentally. Sakura doesn’t teach martial arts for the purpose of using your abilities to hurt others. It teaches self control, discipline and confidence in knowing that if you ever find yourself in a situation where you need to defend yourself, you are capable.
Regardless of your sex, age, fitness level or body type, Sakura BJJ can help you achieve all of your fitness and martial art goals. It will help you to not only excel in the dojo and in competition, but will prepare you for life.

“It is not for nothing that the samurai have chosen for their truest symbol the fragile cherry blossom.”
Cherry blossoms (Sakura) were seen to possess natural beauty and grace.
The word ‘beauty’ does not refer simply to the appearance of the flower; it captures the sense of dignity and strength contained within something so fragile and fleeting.
“Grace” is a word seldom considered in our times.
It can mean a variety of things: compassion, kindness, goodwill, elegance and beauty of movement.
For the samurai, grace meant rectitude.
Rectitude can be defined as appropriate conduct; considering how your behavior affects other people and seeking to do what is right.
The cherry blossom is a reminder that our life will not last.
In the face of death, is there any need for pettiness, argument, callousness and cruelty?
If you accept death, does that change how you live?
Nothing that we consider important will last – especially ourselves.
